On December 14, I was informed that I had made it to the finalist round for Gates Cambridge, and that interviews were to be held on February 7, After finishing my coursework at UCLA, I moved home in December, picked up a job as a waitress at a local diner, and started applying for office jobs in the Bay Area. How I was shocked during my Gates Cambridge interview: During my minute interview with the Gates committee in February, I was completely stunned by a question that one of the British members posed as a research question. It is a very active and supportive community. I had some hold up with documents that required me to apply for a fast track visa a substantial difference in application fee - they reimbursed it without any questions. I felt they do a very good job of welcoming you at the orientation retreat. They also arrange activities throughout the year which are both academic and recreational. Additionally, the Gates common room is strikingly reminiscent of Honors lounge at UB. How much do you interact with your cohort of GC Scholars? This is heavily dependent on the subject you study. Most of my friends are in college and department, some of whom are Gates scholars. Saying that, I feel I can reach out to anyone in the Gates community very easily — I have found most of them to be quite easy to connect to. Another point that might be useful to you — since majority of the Gates Scholars are Americans, the alumni-scholar interaction is stronger in the US. On the application, what is more important? Service or research? Are they of equal importance? Interviews will be held on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th December PhD publications: Seventeen publications, including one first author Nature Genetics paper and six additional first author publications. Major findings include the identification of age-related clonal haemopoiesis driven by leukaemia-associated mutations in healthy individuals. PhD publications: Six publications, including four first author publications.
